THE CONCEPT OF CAT TOOLS

You are here:

We can define CAT Tools (Computer-Assisted/Computer-Aided Translation Tools) essentially as computer programs for translation, in which the most popular feature is the ability to store a translation memory, which includes previously translated passages and sentences.

For this reason, such programs are also known as translation memory tools, but they also encompass a series of other resources, such as analyses, concordance search, terminology management, quality control, autocomplete feature, as well as other configurations.

A very common mistake is confusing translation assistance tools with automatic translation tools. The latter use algorithms to provide instantaneous translation without the need for human intervention, and therefore they have a low degree of linguistic and communicative accuracy. Translation assistance tools on the other hand, as the name itself implies, work as a supporting element for the translator, so that all of the features mentioned above can be used to streamline the work and provide greater assurance. This, however, does not supersede the need for terminology knowledge, mastery of the language and special attention to the target context of the translated material.

Some of the most popular CAT Tools are MemoQ, Memsource, OpenTM, SDL Studio and WordFast, whereas the choice of which to use depends on the translation agency’s preference, prior project history, or the needs of the client in question.

With regard to this diversity, ZAUM adapts to each client, respecting their preferences. We also apply these tools in our translation tests for new service provides, to make sure of their ability to work in the program and to ensure optimal quality in final product delivery.
